Compatibility Issue with Nissin Di866 Professional

As I continue to have intermittent problems with my flash triggers firing I tried updating my firmware for my Nissin Di866 Professionals and was informed by Nissin that the Cactus V-6 is not compatible with my flashes.  Can someone from Cactus verify this?
Yesterday when I set up my flashes it would fire once, skip a shutter release, then fire on the third.  It did this no matter what settings I used and has been a problem since I purchased them.  I am at the point I would like an RGA to return them for full refund.

  • Hi @fotoman sorry could you remind me which system is your NIssin running on?

From the compatibility list, the V6 supports the Di866 Mark II for Canon version and Di866 Mark I (one) for Nikon.

Let us know which one it is and we can again test it on our side. Thank you!

  • I have two Nissin Di866 Professional models. Not Mark I or Mark II. I use them with my Nikon D300 camera.
  • @fotoman Could you try using the Nissin Di700 flash profile and see if it cures the intermittent problems? Just disregard the power levels for now.

    Thanks!

  • I'll try it today and let you know if it works.
  • Antonio, it wouldn't work using the Di700 profile.  It did however work successfully once I put it back to the Di866 profile.  That was indoors and within 10 feet worked using both the short and long range.  I intend to try it in my garage again to see if I can simulate what took place the other day.
  • Antonio:
I took the flash and Cactus V-6 to my patio.  My settings were Manual Mode, TTL on flash and camera, shutter speed set to 1/60 and aperature set to f/8.  I placed the flash units with receivers fifteen feet apart and I stood a distance of ten feet away.  Neither of the units flashed.
I then moved them onto the patio table and the units were about eighteen inches apart.  As you can see from the photos they fired intermittently  I was only able to get them to flash together one time.
I need to have this issue resolved.  I am still under warranty and if Cactus can't figure this out or get them working I think I should be entitled to a refund.  If you review all my posts you will see this issue and others have been going on for some time.

  • Hellp @fotoman thanks for your testing your setup and posting the images. I have just forwarded them to our R&D team and will get back to you ASAP.

Let's see if we can get this sorted, despite Nissin claiming the model to be not compatible. Thank you for your understanding during this time.

So that (the "Professional" moniker) perhaps explains why the V6 does not support your particular variant of the flash.

Wouldn't be a fault of the V6 in this case.

If it is a compatibility issue it certainly is.  I questioned both the manufacturer and dealer about the compatibility prior to my purchase.  Do you have a suggestion as to how to make these units work?

The latest firmware may have a flash profile initialisation problem. Either go back to 1.1.009 or, after having switched on the V6, set the "Nissin Di866" profile again (even if it had already been selected). Hopefully this will fix your issues. You'd have to do the re-selection after each power on, though. I trust Cactus will fix this issue with the latest firmware.

Regarding the V6 being at fault, I think it is clear that it is not compatible with every flash model existing and the official documentation does not claim compatibility with the "Professional" model. So I don't see why the V6 would be at fault if it didn't work with the "Professional" model. If Cactus told you differently in private communication, that would be a different matter, of course.

As I stated earlier before I purchased them I asked both the manufacturer and distributor if they were compatible and I was told they were so.
My problems were with all of the firmware updates.  I just downloaded the latest one and intend to try them out today.

    Antonio:

I have almost $300 worth of equipment I can't utilize.  Has R&D accomplished anything as yet?
  • As I understand it,  they are still studying the Di866 (Nikon). I will post an update as soon as they finds the solution.

Thank you for your continuous patience.

  • Hi,
can someone tell me if the Nissin Di866 is compatible with Canon EOS 77D, I know i'm Off Topic
  • edited October 2017
    Yes, is the answer.

FYI  there's a compatibility table here

Most Canon EOS cameras are compatible, except older models like EOS 20D, or similar models manufactured around the same time.

    Thanks!
