What does it mean to get only part way through the "learning" process?

I have been trying to set up a profile for a Pentax 500FTZ.  I have seen elsewhere and here that people have failed to profile it.  At least one of those people only got as for as the initial incompatibility message.

But I got farther than that.  I was able to get up to the 1/2 power routine, and then got a "flash error" message (flash did not fire). Before that, though, the V6 did get it to fire after setting the guide number and hitting "OK".

So, what does this result mean?  Why wouldn't this analog flash (doesn't even have P-TTL, just TTL) be profilable?

  • @texandrews Please check what's the exact message displayed on the V6 because we don't have "FLASH ERROR" as one of them.

My guess is that the batteries were still charging the flash capacitor while the V6 wanted to trigger the flash at 1/1 full power.  Try loading a freshly-charged set of batteries before starting the Learning Program.

Thanks and I look forward to your updates!

  • I also couldn't get the Pentax 500FTZ profiled on the Cactus V6. The display of the Flash shuts down and the Cactus V6 says : Flash Learning not supported!
Why that, it is a analog TTL Flash?
  • @Pid, unfortunately not all analogue TTL flash models can be learned.

You should first try selecting one of the existing Pentax flash profiles on the V6. Choose one with similar power output.

    Thanks!

  • tried all profiles. The 500FTZ can be fired, with some of them, but only on full power as if it would be TTL-passthrough. the 500FTZ seems only to work in manual mode. Does not make any difference if you take a V6 or a V6II :-(
  • As I just replied on the other thread, we are very sorry for this but it seems like the 500FTZ is not compatible. Maybe it was a tad too old?

Reading on Pentax Forums, there's a note saying how this flash can only be used in manual flash mode when paired with non-autofocus cameras and on DSLRS without TTL support (Pentax K-series, *istDL/ DL2), maybe this was the hint that it is differently-spec than any other Pentax flash models?

I hope you are able to get a refund/exchange if you intend to do so. Please let us know if you require any assistance.

    Thank you.
