RF60 TTL not working with Sony A9

I have the latest firmware installed on both my V6IIs and RF60. When in TTL mode the flash seems to just fire at 128th power regardless of what is in the viewfinder. Exposure compensation does work but you need to dial in +5 stops to achieve a correct exposure.

Any ideas?

Regards, Ian

  • Hi Ian,

Could you list the exact firmware versions installed on your V6 IIs and RF60?

    They should be:
    V6 IIs: SON.A.002
    RF60: A06

    Many thanks!

  • Hi Antonio, yes the firmware versions are:

    V6 IIs: SON.A.002
    RF60: A06
  • Thanks! We do not have A9.

Now checking with R&D to see if they have any clue.

  • OK Antonio, I can also check later today on an A7RIII to see if I get the same results.
  • Just for reference, I get exactly the same underexposed results using firmware RF60: 205 and V6IIs: SON.1.002
  • I have now tested with Sony A7RIII camera and unfortunately I am seeing the same -5 stop underexposure in TTL mode.

Normal HSS and Power Sync both work perfectly on A9 and A7RIII.
  • Thank you for your report. I have already passed your experience to R&D. They will try and replicate this / fix.

    Cheers!

  • Thank you Antonio, if you need me to beta test firmware with my A9 or A7RIII please just let me know.

I know you are a small team but any idea of when they may be able to look at this problem? I shoot professionally and have a few jobs coming up that ideally need TTL for rapidly changing events. Not been a requirement of mine up until now.

    Many thanks, Ian
  • In the meantime could do the check?

Do you see numbers popping up on display of V6 II when you adjust ISO / shutter speed / aperture / lens zoom?

    Thanks!

  • Yes all the camera info appears on the LCD and updates as I make changes on the camera.
I tested quickly with a Sony Zeiss 24-70 F4, the focal length info was incorrect though as it reported 20mm to 50mm when the lens was set to 24mm and 70mm. Probably not related to the TTL problem I guess.
  • Good to know camera info works.

Because if camera information is not transferred to the V6 IIs you won't get a proper TTL exposure.

FYI we have been using A7II for our testing and have not encountered any underexposure problems. We do not have A7III, A7RIII nor A9 and we will need to acquire these camera models before we can have any clue as to what went wrong - or what was different than A7II.

I have already forwarded your latest finding to R&D. Once I hear back from them I will post an update.

Thanks for your understanding during this time.

  • I did use to have an A7II until very recently but never tried to use the TTL functionality with that body. Please let me know if I can test anything to speed the process up.

I was wrong about Power Sync, it is NOT working on firmware SON.A.002 Completely black image or just small exposed section at base of image depending on settings.

This use to work perfectly on firmware SON.1.002
  • Thanks for reporting that.

Will update once I hear from R&D.
