V6 Hot Battery Drain

I have six V6 transceivers and one of them has developed a severe battery drain problem. The V6 is running the latest firmware and was in receive mode.

I was on a shoot last Thursday and noticed one of the V6 was draining batteries very fast. When changing the batteries out for fresh ones I noticed the V6 and the batteries were very hot to the touch.

Upon further testing over the weekend I installed a fresh set of batteries and left the V6 switched off. After no more than 10 minutes the V6 and batteries were very hot to the touch.

Any ideas?

Perhaps there is a short-circuit of some kind?

If the unit is out of warranty then you could try to open it yourself and check for any moisture or other signs of electrical bypassing. If you do open one, be gentle as one needs to remove cables to fully separate the halves.

It is pretty fiddly to put a unit together again, but with patience, it can be done.

Of course there could be an issue with components on the PCB in which case there is probably nothing that you can do yourself.

Hi Ian,

As @Class A mentioned above there seems to be a short circuit on that particular V6 unit. You may send it back even if it was purchase over a year ago and we are happy to service it for you. There will be a $15 inspection / repair fee + potential parts fee for items over 1-year warranty period.

@Class A yes I have taken a v6 apart before so I know only too well how many bits tend to fly off in all directions :-)

@Antonio The unit is over a year old but has had little use. I have another five v6 units so will probably keep it for spares, battery door etc. I tend to use the V6 as receivers and use a V6IIs as transmitter. Having moved to RF60 units for small flash I only need a couple of working v6 to trigger Profoto B7 and B2 generators when I need more light.

Or you can consider the soon-to-release Cactus RQ250 when you need more light. It can be triggered directly by a V6 II and V6 IIs.
