RF60X suddenly doesn't fire anymore

My new RF60X died in my second portrait session. I use it with a Pentax K3 and a 6VII. I loaded the right firmware version and all worked well on my first test session. Now during a real portait-shooting it just didn't fire anymore from one moment to the other. Max power was 1/16 and max 6 pictures in a row. A second flash (RF60) was doing ok even when the RF60X gave up. A longer pause, fresh batteries and a firmware reset didn't help. I can switch on the flash and can operate the menue and the test light is on but I can't fire it. Any ideas? Or maybe it's relay dead.

  • Hello @Gerd,

I am sorry to hear about this.  Could you tell us what firmware did you installed on your Cactus devices?

Since you are using Pentax, I am guessing:
    1. V6 II:  PEN.A.001
    2. RF60X:  A04
    3. RF60:  A03

If that's the case, would installing these firmware versions bring back the RF60X to life?
    1. V6 II:  1.1.013  (multi-brand HSS)
    2. RF60X:  103
    3. RF60:  205

Also, when you switch on the RF60X, set it to Local (L) mode:
    1. Do you see the Status LED in red?  i.e. is the capacitor being charged up by the batteries?
    2. Are you able to adjust power and / or zoom level directly on the flash?
    3. And to confirm, it does not fire when you press the test button?

If the above works, then is it only a wireless connection (RF) issue with the V6 II?

Also, what kind of "fresh batteries" were used?  In case they are "freshly charged" NiMH (e.g. eneloop), try a set of 1.5V alkaline batteries and see if they make any difference?

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

  • In case it still does not fire, it could be a damaged flash tube or that MCU malfunction.

Thanks and keep us posted on your tests.
