Remote Shutter Release Will Not Fire Flash

First let me start by saying what my set up is. A7II with Sony Flash HVL-F60M, Tx on top of camera fires properly to Rx remote flash & adjustments can be made at the Tx for flash outputs, it works fine.

Now for Remote Shutter Release & Flash:
The unit on top of my A7II, I switch the transceiver from Tx to Rx, install shutter release cable, go to menu & make sure Relay is 'ON', it says it is on the screen. Now go to remote flash transceiver, switch it from Rx to Tx, go to menu make sure Relay is 'ON', it says it is on the screen. Channels are in sync, group A is active on both, I push the shutter release (on the remote flash transceiver) & it auto focuses & then fires the camera, however the flash does not go off. Tried this multiple times & yes the flash is on & in TTL.

I flip everything back to where it was before trying to activate remote shutter release & flash & it works just fine.

Can anyone help me, getting very frustrated.....islandexposures

  • Hi there @islandexposures,

Could you please clarify, where is your F60M flash mounted on when you turned on Relay mode on both the V6 IIs transceivers?

The typical setup would look like this, with three (3) V6 II units:
    1. V6 II TX (1/3): hold in hand
    2. V6 II RX (2/3): mounted on camera hot shoe and connected to camera via shutter release cable
    3. V6 II RX (3/3): HVL-F60M mounted on this unit
All V6 II units set to Relay mode.

    Thank you.

  • I don't have a 3rd V6II. I do real estate photography & need to do window pulls for exterior views through windows, sliders, french doors, etc...shoot lots of homes on the ocean & views are everything. I have been exposing for the windows & flashing the room, then I read about window pulls & decided to give it a try.  With that said I read an article from a guy who is doing just that with his Sony, uses 2 units, walks around shooting windows from his remote flash without having to keep walking back to his camera to fire a 5 sec timer then run to where he has to be for his next shot. I read an article (can't seem to find it now) about activating the units in a specific order or they wouldn't fire & wished Cactus mentioned that in the manual. So in short I want to be able to walk around with my remote flash firing windows, I was doing that with my Sony remote (on another wireless system) but its IR & have to be on a specific side of the camera for it to fire, again get into position to line up the IR then walk to where I need to be. Trying to make it easy on myself. Thanks for your response & looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Never heard back from you on my question concerning turning on flashes & triggers in a specific order, & also if I do need a 3rd trigger for firing will I be able to walk around making flash adjustments from room to room on the trigger? At times there are closets, hallways, rooms down the hall that need extra lighting, I want to shoot each area & at the same time make flash adjustments walking from location to location. Some might be at 1/1, 1/16, 1/4, or less. If I can do this without walking back to the camera making these adjustments it would be great. Please reply, just trying to get fully up to speed on what I can do. I purchased 2 triggers & if I purchase a 3rd & do not have this capability I just wasted my money & want to return the 2 I purchased. Already have this with the Odin System that has Manual & TTL functions. Thanks for your time, looking forward to hearing from you.
  • I am going to try it with my own equipment and I will back soon.
  • Thanks, Looking forward to what you find out.
  • Well I just returned my Cactus triggers, found another product that suits my needs better. I would need to purchase a 3rd trigger, now I'm up to 3 @$95 ea. at a cost of $285.00. With the flash on top of trigger & another on my hip, carrying to  much around, the idea was to travel light & less cumbersome. Everything in life is a compromise nothing is perfect but I think I found the perfect solution. Just purchased a Flashpoint eVOLV 200 TTL for $329 that is hand held & has way more power then a speedlight on a stick. For the amount I was going to pay for 3 triggers it just wasn't cost effective & now I have a more powerful speedlight in my hands. Still have to use my IR Sony Remote but I'm ok with that, as for having to make adjustments at the camera I'm ok with that as well. If I have to walk back once or twice that's ok to for the amount of power & versatility I'm going to have with the Evolv 200r2. Thanks for the help just the same...Best  Regards
  • Thanks for the update @islandexposures

It seems like you are given up a lot, saying "that's ok" a few times. But whatever works for you is good. All the best.
