non working v6

I was using 2 v6 units with no issue and then one stopped working. It was working while I was using it and then it stopped suddenly, so I thought it was because the batteries went dead. I changed out the batteries and it is still not working. I can however, connect to my computer and upgrade the firmware, which I did, but once I put batteries back in, the unit won't work. The batteries are not dead, as they work in the other unit without issue. Does anyone know how I can troubleshoot it or get it to work again?

  • Possibly the internal contacts of the V6 got bent. I once dropped a unit and after that I had to adjust the internal contacts to make it working again.

    That happened with a test unit I used, though; later production units apparently have a protection against the internal contacts getting bent too much.

    If you look inside the battery compartment, you can see the contacts and perhaps you can compare them with the working unit (potentially measure the distance from the top to contacts). Or you may feel the batteries moving a bit, when you shake the defective V6 unit.

    If it's the contacts then you may be able to bend them back without dismantling the V6. I disassembled mine, bent the contacts a bit back and then put it together again. Be warned, though. This is very fiddly work. You'll have to deal with very small ribbon cable connectors. If you don't have the right tools and patience for this job, you may not get your V6 back together again in working condition.

    If the unit can be repaired, I'm sure Cactus will do it for a reasonable fee, assuming it is out of warranty.
  • It's almost a year out of warranty. The unit that works has the more wobbly batteries and I don't recall dropping it. It just stopped in the middle of using it. But I will look at the contacts and then possibly just replace. Thanks

    As Class A suggested above, do try adjusting the battery springs inside the V6 II's compartment so that they are bend more towards the opening, and would give more pressure pushing against the batteries.
